Open Letter to the President: Ghana is 60, Ghana has TB at 60!

H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo

President of the Republic of Ghana and Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces

Flagstaff House

Dear Mr. President,

Greetings from La where I am the station manager of Radio Latenu 96.1MHz, a Ga community radio station.

Ghana is 60 but Ghana has TB.

Ghana is riddled with TB and its people are dying.

Mr.  President, our radio station has been executing this campaign for about a week with very limited success.

But I guess no one has mentioned it to you so I decided to write.

I have also telephoned people close to you but have not been successful.

Mr President, in May 2016 during your election campaign you were interviewed in our studio at Latenu 96.1MHz. You are therefore familiar with the station and you know its profound influence within the Ga community- the indigenes of our national capital, Accra.

However, I have chosen to publish this letter in your own newspaper, The Daily Statesman, in order to draw your immediate attention to the raging Tuberculosis epidemic in our country.

Hopefully this will make our public servants wake up since they know the Daily Statesman is your mouthpiece.

Mr.  President, the statistics are alarming.

Ten thousand new cases were detected in 2015.

Fifteen thousand new cases were recorded in 2016; an increase of over 50%.

In the La Dadekotopon municipality where you launched your manifesto and held your final rally of 2016, I am sad to inform you that 153 new cases were detected that year and 9 persons died of TB!

Each infected person with TB has the potential to infect another 10-15 persons with the disease.

Even scarier, Mr.  President, our National Surveillance Program estimates that it only “catches” at best 30 percent of the TB cases.

But happily TB treatment in Ghana is free and effective.

Therefore a strong Public Education and awareness campaign will surely save lives and stop the spread of this deadly disease.

Respectfully, Mr. President, I ask that you recall the 60th anniversary torch back to Independence Square.

Then solemnly light it again and give it back to Nii Azumah Nelson with the message “Ghana is 60, Ghana has TB”.

This will galvanize the whole nation to resist and conquer TB.

TB is a threat to national security.

Mr. President, I shall be most grateful if you will please acknowledge receipt.

Holding my breath as I await your response.
